Grocery stores are secretly one of the best math classrooms available to parents. Prices, quantities, weights, comparisons, estimation — it is all right there on the shelves. And unlike a worksheet, your child actually cares about the outcome.
You do not need to turn every trip into a formal lesson. Just five well-placed questions, asked casually, can build more number sense in 20 minutes than a homework session.

Five Questions to Ask
"If these apples cost $2 each, how much for 4?" Simple multiplication in a context that matters. Let them estimate first, then check. If they are younger, start with "how much for 2?"
"Which is a better deal: the big box or the small one?" This introduces unit pricing without ever saying "unit pricing." Kids love being the one who spots the better deal. Let them hold both boxes and reason through it.
"We have $20 left. Can we get all three things on the list?" Mental addition with a constraint. They have to round, estimate, and decide. Real budgeting, real math, real stakes (they want all three things).
